Do Indonesian students need the SAT for NUS, NTU, and SMU?
The qualification chooses the rule
An Indonesian student can attend a national, IB, A-Level, or other school route. The university reads the qualification presented in the application. That is why three students with the same passport can receive different SAT answers.
The comparison below is for an applicant using the Indonesian Ijazah SMA route. Requirements were reviewed on 14 October 2026. Reopen each official page for the student's actual intake.
| University | Current role of SAT for Indonesian Ijazah SMA | Decision for the student |
|---|---|---|
| NUS | The route states that SAT, ACT, and AP are not required; English evidence is required | Choose an accepted English route and protect school results |
| NTU | English evidence is mandatory; SAT is one accepted route among several | Compare accepted English routes against readiness and timing |
| SMU | One accepted standardised test is required for most international qualifications; SAT is one option | Choose the test that creates the strongest feasible submission |

NUS: SAT is outside the required route
The NUS Indonesian Ijazah SMA page lists standardised tests such as AP, ACT, and SAT as unnecessary for both completed-school and current Grade 12 applicants. The route still requires English evidence and programme prerequisites.
The practical decision is to choose a valid English route, check programme eligibility, and prepare the school records exactly as requested. Adding SAT should have a specific purpose beyond habit or peer pressure.
NTU: SAT can serve as English evidence
NTU requires one accepted English proficiency result for Indonesian Ijazah SMA applicants. Its page lists several routes, including IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, C1 Advanced, SAT, ACT with Writing, and certain First Language English qualifications.
This creates a choice. Compare test readiness, available dates, score validity, and the remaining application work. The fastest familiar test can be more useful than starting a second preparation track.
NTU also warns applicants to use the form matching their actual school qualification. The wrong form may go unprocessed. This is the kind of route detail that should be settled before test preparation expands.
SMU: one accepted standardised test is part of the route
SMU's international qualifications page requires one accepted standardised test for most listed qualifications. SAT is one option alongside ACT and several English-language tests. The page lists exceptions including the IB Diploma and certain accepted arts diplomas.
SMU also states that meeting a minimum score does not guarantee an interview or admission. Treat the published requirement as an entry gate. The rest of the application still needs a coherent academic and programme case.
The decision rule
Ask these questions in order:
- Which qualification will appear on the application?
- What does the exact university page require for that qualification?
- Is SAT required, accepted as one route, or absent from the route?
- Which available test best fits the student's current evidence and timeline?
- What application work loses time if SAT preparation expands?
This framework releases a useful part of our admissions method. The final weighting stays individual because current scores, school results, intended programme, and time remaining change the answer.
Common questions
Does a high SAT score replace weak school results?
No. These universities continue to evaluate the school qualification and programme requirements. A test should serve the route identified on the official page.
Does an Indonesian student at an IB school use the Indonesian Ijazah route?
Use the route for the qualification the student will present. Check the university's IB page and application form.
When should I recheck these rules?
Check before choosing a test and again before submitting. Save the official page and the date reviewed in the student's decision record.
